Abstract

DESCRIPTION OF THE CLIMATE OF THE HUMID CHACO. This chapter includes a description of the climate of the Humid Chaco eco- region, in which the El Bagual Reserve is found. It includes a brief analysis of the changing sequence of floods, droughts and fires, the influence of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, and a possible scenario of global climatic change in this region. A climatogram was made based on temperature and precipitation data taken at the El Bagual Reserve meteorological station between 1988 and 2004. An analysis of the historical precipitation records also shows that there have been marked seasonal and annual variations, and a general increase in the average rainfall over the last 40 years. We also expect that this information will be useful in creating awareness about the importance of preserving this eco-region of high biological diversity
