Abstract

Focuses on 2 auditory ERP effects that may be attributed to 2 independent cognitive processes: attention-modulated processing and mismatch detection. ERPs were recorded from 9 normal Ss (aged 25–42 yrs) performing an easy and a hard selective attention task in which longer tones (170 msec) were randomly embedded in a sequence of shorter (100 msec) standard tones. Performance was more accurate in the easy task. ERPs elicited in the simple reaction time (RT) condition differed from those elicited by the standards in the selective attention condition. Median RT did not differ between tasks. Neither direction of attention nor task difficulty affected the latency of mismatch negativity, N2, or P3.
