See, stats, and : http : / / www . researchgate . net / publication / 242346845 City : A - of - the - art Review ARTICLE DOI : 10 . 1108 / 17538331111117133 CITATIONS 39 2 : Andrea Stockholm 8 SEE Per Stockholm 10 SEE Available : Andrea Retrieved : 28 Abstract Purpose – The aim of the paper istocarryoutacontemporaryandconcise"state-of-the-art"reviewofthecitybrandingresearchdomain,inparticularhowscholarshaveapproachedthisfieldofstudy,whataspectsofcitybrandinghavebeenstudied,whatcitieshavebeenchosen,andhowthestudiesaredesigned.Design/methodology/approach–Throughaniterativesearchinmultipleliteraturedatabases,217qualifiedresearchstudiesoncitybrandingwereidentifiedandretrieved.Thosestudieswereexamined,analyzedandcategorizedaccordingtosixcategories:bibliographicaldata,methodologiesused,empiricalfoundation,conceptualframeworks,brandingelements,andreportedoutcomesofbrandingefforts.Findings–Citybrandingisemergingasaninternationallyrecognizedresearchdomaincharacterizedbyahighdegreeofmulti-disciplinary,rapidproliferationinandbetweendisciplines,andasomewhatfragmentedtheoreticalfoundation.Onthebasisofresearchinterests,threeperspectiveswereidentified(producing,consuming,andcriticizingcitybranding)emergingacrossacademicdisciplines.Researchlimitations/implications–ThestudyisbasedonresearcharticlesinEnglish,publishedinacademicjournals,whichlimitstheinternationalandprofessionalscopeofthestudy.Anotherlimitationistheselectedtimeperiod,whichdoesnotincludestudiespriorto1988orlaterthan2009.Originality/value–Asastate-of-the-artreview,themaincontributionofthispaperisacontemporaryandcomprehensiveoverviewofthefieldassuch.Amethodologicalcontributionistheattempttorunamulti-variateanalysisofthebrandingelementsinrelationtotheoutputandperformancedatareportedinthestudies.Anothercontributionistheidentificationofthreecross-disciplinaryresearchperspectivesinthefieldtoday.
