Abstract

The past few decades have seen tremendous advances in understanding and treating schizophrenia, a disorder once thought to be virtually untreatable. Growing evidence shows that people with schizophrenia can benefit from pharmacological treatments and psychosocial rehabilitation, and can become productive, valued members of their communities. This comprehensive volume synthesizes the breadth of current scientific knowledge about the disease and offers clear guidelines for assessment and intervention in diverse contexts. The Handbook is designed for accessibility and optimal clinical utility. In lieu of exhaustive literature reviews, each of the 61 concise chapters summarizes the state of the science; highlights key points that practitioners need to know; and lists recommended resources, including seminal research studies, useful clinical tools, and more. The book begins with the scientific foundations, reviewing the nature, causes, and prevalence of schizophrenia, as well as its course and outcomes. Subsequent sections address practical issues in assessment and diagnosis and describe effective somatic and psychosocial treatments and how they are implemented. Systems for coordinating and delivering care are outlined, including case management models and treatment principles for community, medical, residential, and correctional settings. Also presented is guidance for treating specific populations: older adults, children and adolescents, individuals who are homeless, those dealing with common co-occurring medical and psychiatric problems, and others. Concluding sections explore policy, legal, and social issues and cover such special topics as sexuality, quality of life, growth and recovery, spirituality, and culture. Providing a wealth of information for professionals in any setting who work with clients with severe mental illness, the Handbook also belongs on the desks of researchers and policymakers. Students in clinical psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing, and related fields will find it an invaluable text. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
