Europe and the U.S. both face the challenges of urban schools with
low-achieving adolescent learners, many of whom are not proficient in
the language of instruction. This paper describes the deployment and
evaluation of the AnimalWatch intelligent tutoring system for
mathematics in challenging classrooms. Previous studies demonstrated
that AnimalWatch benefits 12-14 year-old students in relatively
controlled conditions. The current study indicates that the system can
help older, very low-achieving students in challenging secondary schools
that serve diverse student populations.
