Abstract

A review with 368 refs. concerning the ecol. and biogeochem. of in-situ groundwater bioremediation is given. Topics discussed include: microorganism diversity and distribution in pristine aquifers (oligotrophic nature of subsurface, types of subsurface microorganisms, microorganism nos. and distribution); and microbial ecol. and biogeochem. of polluted aquifers (terminal electron-accepting processes in polluted aquifers, in-situ bioremediation of specific pollutants [arom. hydrocarbons, halogenated solvents and related compds., NO3- bioremediation, metal and metalloid pollutant bioremediation]).
