Part of a special issue on technology and lifelong learning. In an introduction to the special issue, the writer introduces the articles presented and explains why they were selected. Each of the articles in this issue address some key aspects relating to the use of technology to support lifelong learning. These aspects relate to how to connect distributed people in a secure, safe, and stimulating way; how to develop, use, and share learning units; how to navigate the network given a large number of informal and formal learning opportunities; how to position learners in a learning network; and how to evaluate and support learners in the management of the learning process.
