In line with the topics of the previous chapter, the kinetics of product formation in enzyme catalyzed biological processes is given here with reference to diverse models. The enzymes will be treated first since it is supposed here that enzymes are not consumed during the process and therefore the modeling of their reaction kinetics is simpler in comparison to the production of biomass itself. The Michaelis–Menten model is reported and explained together with the Briggs–Haldane approach and the Monod model. Some derivations are done in details, for instance, the Briggs–Haldane equation and the evaluation of the residence time in a mixed flow fermentor.
