Abstract

Maastrichtian and Danian chalk and limestones are exposed in the sub-Quaternary surface in a zone across northern Jylland. Mostly, the rocks are covered by glacial and post-glacial deposits, but the chalk and limestones are readily accessible in a series of quarries centred around Aalborg and in the Thisted Structure, situated between Thisted and Hanstholm. This investigation focuses on Rørdal near Aalborg and Thisted Kalkverk, Hillerslev & Nye Kløv in the Thisted Structure. The Maastrichtian and Danian chalk and limestones in northern Jylland are considered close on-shore facies analogues to the chalk reservoirs in the North Sea. The outcrop based part of the present study has been directed solely towards the Maastrichtian chalk.
