As deputy director for policy in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Kalil helps the Obama administration determine which projects should receive a slice of the billions in research and development dollars that the federal government spends each year. It’s a monumentally important task as the president leans heavily on scientific innovation to help push America’s moribund economy out of the ditch. The American Recovery Act, also known as the $787 billion federal stimulus of 2009, pumped money into myriad innovation projects, much of it directed by the Office of Science and Technology Policy, or OSTP.
