Fibromyalgia syndrome is the third most frequent painful musculoskeletal condition after lumbar pain and osteoarthritis, in terms of prevalence. It is a complicated disease that causes severe impairment in quality of life and function, as well as significant financial costs. Although its diagnosis has improved with the development of more precise diagnostic criteria, there may be missed diagnoses of fibromyalgia. Once a diagnosis has been determined, clinicians should enhance patient function and reduce the severity of pain by nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatments. A multi-modal therapy strategy is required due to the various components of the etiology and maintenance of the disease. The rate of disability is shown to be considerably decreased with effective treatment.
