Urban underground development necessitates protection of existing buildings, located within the zone of construction operations influence. Geotechnical cut-off diaphragm walls, erected between underground excavations (pits or tunnels) and existing buildings, are an effective protection tool. The paper describes cut-off diaphragm walls, made of steel pipes, cast-in-situ and deep-mix soil-cement piles and implemented on Moscow construction sites. Numerical and field data is presented, pertaining to geotechnical barriers erection between deep excavations or service tunnels and existing buildings. Recommendations are given for effective application of geotechnical cut-off diaphragm walls. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.
