Las Águilas Doradas: Más allá de las Fronteras y del Tiempo

Abstract

The motive of a bird with wings unfolded is often found in Tairona goldwork, which comes from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, and is a typical archaeological feature over a wide region, ranging from lower Central America to Guyana. The article brings together existing information for this region about archaeology, chance finds, ethno-historical and ethno- graphic sources, and symbolic interpretations. It goes on to classify the 280 Tairona birds in the Bogotá Gold Museum’s collection, some of them C-14 dated, into thirteen distinctive categories. 38 Imagen
