Abstract

If any company is to adapt and survive in this rapidly changing and highly competitive industrial world, it needs to be able to control each of the fundamental aspects of its business (1). Focusing on our business, one can also ask if maintenance should be treated as a “fundamental aspect or core activity” in cement manufacturing. Not an easy question! Before coming to quick decision, let us review few facts:  Maintenance cost cumulates to almost 20-30% of total cement manufacturing cost.  Due to nature of our production processes, equipment malfunction directly hinders production ability in most of the cases.  “Stop-and-go” kind of operation has negative impact both on manufacturing cost and product quality. Whether it should be one of our core activity or not, those above facts and the stakes behind require us to investigate more in depth before coming any early decision. Reliability
