The article discusses the auteurs, entrepreneurs and editorial control in Civil War newspapers. The process of reconceptualising early modern journalism begins with issues internal to the running of newspapers, which fall under two main areas. These are identification of editorial staff and of the division of labour within specific journalistic operations; and recognition of personal motivational factors, as well as the constraints of the market for print in the mid-seventeenth century.
