Abstract

The study of mathematics seeks a deeper understanding of the underlying concepts and structures as well as the exploration of the boundaries and reason. Within the mathematics community the study of pure mathematics is considered the heart of the discipline. Outside the community of mathematicians, few recognize the creative nature of mathematics. For most, the utilitarian aspects of mathematics defines the discipline. The mathematical tools learned in educational settings serve to help envision, model, and predict outcomes or discover patterns and relationships which have supported advances in science, engineering, economics, technology and many other fields. Yet these tools were invented or discovered through creative mathematical thought; a capability inherent in all of us, albeit at different levels and used in different ways.
