Members of the primary gene pool of Pennisetum americanum, that is plants that will hybridize with P. americanum to produce fully fertile offspring, are briefly described, including their morphology and distribution. These include both wild Pennisetum varieties and weeds that mimic P. americanum. The distribution, taxonomy and races of P. americanum are described and theories to account for its domestication are reviewed
