Abstract

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) comprise a large and complex group of neurologic disorders with variable etiologies, various affected tissues within the brain, and myriad of clinical manifestations. Most NDDs are characterized by neurologic symptoms that progress chronically and relentlessly over time. Many are age related, with peak prevalence occurring in the elderly population. With advancing life expectancies, the numbers of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other NDDs have reached epidemic proportions.
