A shrinking device is an intriguing illusion device that can convert an arbitrary object virtually into a desired small-size object. By performing linear transformation along the orthogonal direction, two-dimensional and three-dimensional electromagnetic shrinking devices with anisotropic homogeneous material parameters are designed in this paper. Moreover, to further remove the limitation of material anisotropy, layered device composed of only homogenous and isotropic materials are presented based on effective medium theory. The effects of incident angle of the electromagnetic wave on the performance of the layered device are also investigated. The full-wave simulation confirms the good performance of proposed shrinking devices. This work expands the application of transformation electromagnetics, and represents an important progress towards the practical realization of shrinking device. © 1965-2012 IEEE.
