A new technique has been developed which allows the number of bubbles released from a supersaturated solution of a gas to be counted when the supersaturation is relieved. It is shown that this number is closely related to the number of nuclei formed, and this allows a quantitative test of nucleation theory. The kinetics of dissolution and evolution of carbon dioxide from pure water are reported. © 1988.
