Comments on the article by R. M. Lawrence et al (see record 2002-13725-010) regarding the medico-legal implications of off-label prescribing for dementia. The commenting authors find that this work complements some work they have done in this area. Their postal questionnaire found that 65% of psychiatrists who replied had prescribed off-label within the preceding month. The authors cite some legal cases that should be taken into account when deciding such matters and suggest some guidelines that may avoid future medico-legal problems for clinicians if they should prescribe off-label.
