Abstract

Examined the effects of dextromethorphan on signs, symptoms, and cravings characteristic of withdrawal from opioids in 6 males (aged 25-65 yrs) addicted to heroin. Ss completed measures to evaluate opiate withdrawal at baseline and 3 times a day during hospitalization. Dextromethorphan was given 5 times a day. The 4 Ss who completed treatment had a rapid and complete attenuation of signs, symptoms, and cravings. Ss who successfully completed the trial reported a subjective difference from previous detoxifications with methadone.
