Poverty and Sanitation

Abstract

This document presents an analysis of urban and rural poverty levels in Honduras and its access to sanitation solutions, and identifies key aspects to improving services and to contributing to the definition of sectorial policies, strategies and plans of investment. Area analysed include: access to sanitation and the situation at the national level; rural sanitation; urban sanitation; strategic considerations for urban sanitation; strategic considerations for rural sanitation; investment, financing and subsidies for sanitation. The analysis of the linkage between poverty and access to basic sanitation in Honduras leads to the following conclusions and recommendations: (i) prioritize pro-poor policies designed to facilitate their access to improved and sustainable sanitation services; (ii) adopt appropriate and innovative technologies and methodologies for infrastructure and service management, for the creation of sustainable basic services and for technical support; (iii) stimulate the participation of civil society organizations in decision making and service management; and (iv) involve the coordinated participation of nongovernmental organizations and international cooperation agencies in developing sanitationprograms.
