Abstract

English The author explores five hypotheses that aim to fill a gap in sociological thinking about the intersection of nation, culture and religion in the area of the former Yugoslavia. The central argument is that a distinction between "borders" and "frontiers" contributes towards a better understanding of the processes whereby culture has been radically politicized and whereby religion has been patrimonialized.
