Abstract

Recent interest on the problem of enhancing degraded speech is motivated by several factors, including a broad set of important applications and the apparent lack of robustness in recent speech compression and recognition systems. The author provides an overview of various techniques that have been proposed for enhancement of speech. He considers enhancement of speech degraded by additive noise and by echos and then discusses time-scale modification of speech. He suggest areas for future research.
