Abstract

Inspired by nacre, a layered poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-clay nanocomposite hydrogel was successfully fabricated by combination of vacuum-filtration self-assembly and photo-initiated in situ polymerization. This bio-inspired layered nanocomposite hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties, which can rival some biological soft tissues (see picture). Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
