Abstract

Part of a special issue on teachers of gifted learners. Characteristics of effective teachers of gifted diverse students and of culturally responsive classrooms are outlined. Culturally competent professionals possess self-awareness and understanding, cultural awareness and understanding, social responsiveness and responsibility, and culturally sensitive techniques and strategies. Characteristics associated with culturally responsive classrooms relate to culturally relevant pedagogy, equity pedagogy, perceptions of knowledge, holistic teaching philosophy, a communal philosophy, respect for students' primary language, culturally congruent instructional practices, student-family-teacher relationships, and diverse teaching staff. Suggestions for educators on becoming more culturally responsive are provided.
