Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are an essential structural component of cell membranes and play a major part in a multitude of metabolic processes. As EFAs are localised to cell membranes, it is more appropriate to measure erythrocyte-membrane EFAconcentration than serum EFA levels. EFA imbalances may be corrected with diet/supplements.
