The article discusses the use of smartphones in higher education. Innovative uses of the smartphones include an application for taking attendance and learning students' names, their use by professors to read journal articles, and the transcription of notes from a whiteboard with the aid of a phone's camera function. Along with professors, students have begun using the phones to read textbooks and other course materials. The availability of higher education smartphone applications for purchase through the online Apple iTunes store is also discussed. Professors' use of "mind mapping" applications to display ideas is detailed, including the applications "Thinking Space" for Android smartphones, "MindBlowing" for Apple iPhone devices, and "Popplet" for iPad devices, also from Apple.
