Abstract

The outcomes of 31 total hip arthroplasties in 24 patients with either severe congenital dysplasia or dislocation, after a mean follow-up of 4 years are reported. Results were excellent in 11, good in 16, fair in 1, and poor in 1. The operative technique included superolateral bone grafting to increase the acetabular coverage in six hips. Twenty-seven hips required smaller and straighter femoral components than normal. The incidence of major complications was 19 %. The operative procedure and indications are described and complications emphasized.
