Using a defined culture medium it was shown that Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes (strains Y, Ma, and F1) do not require exogeneous nucleotides for continuous cultivation. Biochemical determinations carried out on parasites grown in the presence or absence of exogenous nucleotides revealed no differences in intracellular nucleotide concentrations. This suggests that T. cruzi epimastigotes have the capacity for de novo nucleotide synthesis. Choline and folic acid were necessary only for high yields of T. cruzi, suggesting that epimastigotes can partially satisfy their vitamin requirements. © 1981.
