An overview of the constantly changing areas of in vitro dissolution research for the evaluation of novel oral drug delivery systems is presented, and fundamental dissolution theories, basic theories of dissolution profile analysis, currently recommended dissolution methods in the 23rd edition of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), alternative dissolution methods to currently recommended USP 23 methods for swellable sticking and swellable floatable delivery systems, elementary and Scale Up and Post Approval Changes (SUPAC) based dissolution data analysis, and the advantages and limitations of the time point/ratio test and pairwise approaches used in dissolution data treatment are considered).
