Abstract

In this work we present preliminary data on the volume and composition of waste arriving at two major landfill sites in the South of England. In particular we focus on construction and demolition waste, contributing 2% and 10% by volume respectively to general waste arriving at major landfill sites in Sussex. Both sectors are contributing larger amounts of timber than expected from previous reports on waste arriving to landfill, and less rubble. Differences in the compositions of Civil Engineering Waste and Builders Waste are noted. Detailed data is presented which shows how many loads arrived containing a given percentage of a material type, which is intended to be of use to those interested in the separability of waste for recycling.
