Abstract

Cartography is defined as the field of studies as well as scientific, artistic, and technical operations based on results from direct observations on the exploitation of documentation, with the purpose of compiling maps, plans and other graphics, and of explaining their use. Different systems of planar projection, including remarks on map scale, are discussed. Cartographic systems for taking a cross section, for representing planimetric detail, and for representing terrain contour are described. Relief maps, legends, and techniques for drawing maps are also considered. - from STAR, 19(11), 1981
