There is already a widespread use of CCTV systems in the security world. The number seems set to increase dramatically both as a result of the growth in crime and the perceived effectiveness of such systems. This paper examines the impact which new technologies and techniques will have upon both existing and future systems. It looks at devices ranging from video entry phones to advanced surveillance cameras and proposes ways in which value can be added by extending the range of functions which the devices can perform. The paper has been written to stimulate interest in three sections of the security community, namely, users of CCTV systems, manufacturers and development engineers.
