Abstract

This article examines the concepts of creativity and innovation, specifically in work settings. Research into individual, group, and organizational innovation is described. The research suggests the importance of individual characteristics such as confidence, intellectual abilities, and perseverance for individual innovativeness, along with work environments that are experienced as challenging but psychosocially safe. Within work groups, clear objectives, high levels of participation, a commitment to excellence, and practical support for innovation are needed. Innovative organizations tend to be smaller, younger, and operating under conditions of uncertainty or even external threat, and most have practical schemes for encouraging innovation. Employees frequently have ideas for improving their workplaces, work functioning, processes, products, or services. Where climates are characterized by distrust, lack of communication, personal antipathies, limited individual autonomy, and unclear goals, the implementation of these ideas is inhibited.
