Abstract

This Information Paper introduces the structureand process of the sustainable developmentframework that BRE Global has developed.The framework provides a practical approachto implementing national, regional and localplanning policy requirements, and economic,environmental and social sustainabilityobjectives for development projects withinthe built environment. The framework willenable developers, planning consultants andlocal planning authorities to demonstrate andverify the extent to which these requirementsand objectives are met within masterplans putforward for planning approval.The role of regional sustainability checklists,GreenPrint and other compliant assessmentmethodologies within the framework is explained.BREEAM Communities, the recently launched thirdparty assessment certification standard, is givenparticular attention, and its benefits for planningauthorities and developers are highlighted. Casestudies of two major developments pilotingthe BREEAM Communities standard illustratethe wide range of sustainable issues that needto be addressed when creating sustainabledevelopments.
