Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of hyperandrogenism in women and adolescent girls. A 1990 consensus conference of the United States Institutes of Health identified key features for the diagnosis of PCOS: hyperandrogenism, menstrual dysfunction, clinical evidence of hyperandrogenism, and the exclusion of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Probable criteria for PCOS included insulin resistance and perimenarchal onset. Fleischman and Mansfield discuss the diagnosis and treatment of PCOS and insulin resistance.
