An elder on sea ice: An interview with Aipilik Inuksuk of Igloolik, Nunavut

This article provides an introduction to an interview in which an experienced hunter from Igloolik, Aipilik Inuksuk, shares his knowledge of sea ice. It analyses the nature and differences between scientific and Inuit approaches to sea ice, and it describes the difficulties of documenting and recording Inuit knowledge in context. The article describes the Igloolik Oral History Project as an innovative example of documentation of indigenous knowledge.Cet article presente un apercu des resultats d'une entrevue avec Aipilik Inuksuk, un chasseur d'experience originaire d'Igloolik, dans laquelle il communique ses connaissances sur la glace de mer. L'analyse porte sur les elements qui caracterisent et distinguent l'approche scientifique de celle des Inuits en matiere de glace de mer. On y dresse un tableau des difficultes rencontrees pour recueillir et recenser les connaissances des Inuits sur le terrain. L'article montre le caractere novateur du Projet d'histoire orale d'Igloolik dans la maniere de recueillir des informations sur les connaissances indigenes.
