Abstract

This is a short presentation on how the classification of life developed. It includes a discussion of the classification systems that have existed over the years as well as of the location of kingdom fungi among the other kingdoms within the classification system. The establishment of kingdom fungi and the place of Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and other fungi within it are described, along with the use of taxonomy, chemotaxonomy, systematics, phylogeny, and nomenclature in the classification of Basidiomycetes. The classification ranking of Basidiomycetes using up-to-date knowledge is presented.
