Gang Subcultures and Prison Gangs of Female Youth

by Rebecca D Petersen
Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology ()

Recent inmate violence, disruptions, & problems have been attributed to the rise of prison gangs. While some research has investigated this phenomenon, studies of female inmates, especially the juvenile population, have been largely ignored. This study examines the role of female gangs & subcultures by giving detailed, firsthand accounts from 34 young incarcerated women. The models used for the analysis include both the importation & deprivation views of prison subculture development. Results include interpretations of the nature & extent of prison gangs, gang recruitment, prison gang problems, & friendship patterns based on gang alliances. Findings support both subculture models depending on the contextual question. 1 Table, 46 References. Adapted from the source document.
