Abstract

In this chapter, I have taken on the challenging task of covering gender and cultural diversity in developmental sport and exercise psychology. We have a substantial body of sport and exercise psychology work on gender (e.g., Gill, 2002), but almost none of that literature takes a developmental perspective. Furthermore, we have almost nothing on any cultural diversity issues other than gender in sport and exercise psychology, let alone any research or theoretical work with a developmental perspective. To add further challenge, I will take a feminist, gender-relations perspective and assume that gender and multiple cultural identities are interrelated and dynamic. Everything interacts and changes with the time and context. When we try to look at gender and culture in developmental sport and exercise psychology, we find no research or theoretical work that fits such a perspective. In this chapter, I will focus on the limited literature related to gender and culture in sport and exercise, draw upon related psychology and sport studies works, and try to find patterns and connections to bring the diverse works together in a developmental framework.
