Abstract

Examined M. Canale and M. Swain's (1980) discussion of the grammatical, sociolinguistic, and strategic aspects of communicative competence: Their interrelationships were investigated in 4 experiments with 123 English-speaking/Native Armenian, Hispanic, or Chicano children (6–15 yrs of age). Presented are data that distinguish among grammar, meaning, and appropriateness as well as those data that indicate individual measurements of grammatical and sociocultural performance.
