Understanding which types of leader and organization you have is a first step in understanding how to thrive.•There is often a significant disconnect between the stated way an organization is structured and how it actually works. You have to pay attention to both the nominal and actual if you are to succeed as a leader or participant.•Types of leadership in organizations have their pros and cons.
