Abstract

Weight reduction, even under the best of circumstances, is a discipline, and weight maintenance is a lifelong challenge at which only the motivated patient will succeed. With the assumption that the patient is motivated, a sensible approach begins with an assessment of the eating and activity patterns, metabolic characteristics, and psychosocial factors causing and maintaining the obese state. The resulting program should be comprehensive, including education in techniques for environmental management of eating behaviors, excercise and/or increased activity to promote appetite regulation and a sense of well-being, and dietarymanipulation that results in a balanced, nutritionally adequate low calorie intake to promote the maximum rate of weight loss and still maintain health.
