Sociological theories of crime and delinquency

Abstract

This review examines the most frequently cited sociological theories of crime and delinquency. The major theoretical perspectives are presented, beginning with anomie theory and the theories associated with the Chicago School of Sociology. They are followed by theories of strain, social control, opportunity, conflict, and developmental life course. The review concludes with a conceptual map featuring the inter-relationships and contexts of the major theoretical perspectives. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
