Abstract

Examines key aspects of urban development in Kenya, such as spatial goals and priorities, the characteristics of the national urban hierarchy, rural-urban migration, the role of Nairobi as the primate city, the distribution of industry in urban areas, and the urban informal sector. Discussion of these factors provides a context for a normative analysis of a feasible national urban policy for the 1980s and beyond, based on selected growth centers. The implications of this policy for infrastructure allocation are explored, and a set of required complementary policies is outlined.-Author
