Abstract

From the Empire State Building to the Golden Gate Bridge, steel and concrete have traditionally dominated our public works. As engineers brace to rebuild a shaky infrastructure, that pattern should continue. Improved concretes, better steels and composites that use both will be joined by some of the plastic- and glass-based materials that still seem exotic today.
