System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a high-yield and high-efficiency rice production method originated in Madagascar in 1980s. The key elements of this method are: early transplanting of young seedlings; single seedling with wide spacing; wetting irrigation without standing water layer; and adding organic fertilizer. SRI aims at improving the growing environment of individual plants, developing healthy root systems, and encouraging tillering, in order to bring out the yield potentials of every single plant, thus increases the yield. In 2002, large scale comparison and demonstration trials were set up in a couple of different places, and it was proved that SRI helped increase yield and farmer incomes. In 2003, comparison experiments, high-yield trials, and large scale production demonstration were carried out in multiple places in Zhejiang Province, to further study and explore the application value and develop the matching technologies.
