Abstract

Rapid strides have been made in the area of novel drug delivery systems (NDDSs) during the last couple of decades, which has highlighted the importance of intellectual property rights (IPRs). Recently, a large number of NDDSs have been introduced that offer a high degree of therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, and widen the market share of dosage forms for existing drug molecules. The complexities involved in NDDS design makes IP issues of paramount importance. This article presents an overview of various possibilities and opportunities available for intellectual property protection of oral matrix-based controlled release drug delivery systems - the most popular form of NDDS.
